10/22/10 – On Monday, Marisol Valles García, a 20-year-old criminologist student in Ciudad Juarez was named the Chief of Police for the Secretariat of Public Security in the municipality of Praxedis G. Guerrero. José Luis Guerrero, the municipal mayor, told the media that Marisol, although young, matches the profile and “has values and principles” necessary for the position. Valles took the position due to the lack of candidates available.

Valles noted that she believes the fear of drug violence in her region “can be overcome with work and dedication.” According to the online news source El Universal, Valles will be taking a different approach to security by focusing on crime prevention within the community rather than combating drug trafficking, leaving it to the federal police force and army elements. Her police force consists of 18 officers, ten of whom are women. The municipality police station she will be commanding counts on one patrol car, three automatic rifles, and a pistol.

  1. We want to thank you, Marisol Valles Garcia, for standing up for children and youth all over the globe. With your cultural pride and dedication to your people you are showing the true nature of woman—to be compassionate yet steadfast; to be honorable and always dedicated to peace. Like Mother Teresa has already proven, love can and will build a bridge and conquer hate. You, Marisol Valles Garcia, are willing to stand up for your people. And nothing can rise taller than a true calling from God streaming down to the earth. We honor you Marisol and those who stand with you. You are a butterfly among your people–delicate and lovely yet capable of scaling mountains. God Bless you. And shame on any person who would stand against God’s chosen. We, like you, choose peace. We offer you the white flowers of youth to bless your journey. And Marisol, the wind beneath your wings will show the world who you are and why you have chosen this work. No more pain for your people Marisol. We love you. Mothers in Tacoma, Washington, United States of America, February 21, 2011
