Remembering Alejandro Hope

05/15/2023 (written by jcarrillo) – The Justice in Mexico team mourns the loss of Alejandro Hope, a prominent scholar of criminal justice reform regarding Mexico and security analyst of Mexico.

Hope was a collaborator and security analyst at Woodrow Wilson International Center of Scholars, Mexico Institute. He was also a security consultant at Mexico City-based political and economic consulting firm, GEA Grupo de Economistas y Asociados. Additionally, from 2014-2016, he served as the Security and Justice Editor at El Daily Post, an English-language online media outlet that focuses on Mexico. From 2011-2014, Hope worked as the director of security policy at Mexican Competitiveness Institute (IMCO), a Mexico City-based think tank. Prior to his work at IMCO, from 2008-2011, he held multiple executive positions at the Center of Research and National Security. Then, from 1998-2000, Hope served as the chief of staff for Senator Adolfo Aguilar Zinser while working with then president-elect Vicente Fox’s transition team. 

Hope consistently wrote as a columnist for El Universal, a widely read daily newspaper in Mexico. He wrote for and contributed to other newspaper outlets including El Nacional, El Debate, Financial Times, and Business Insider. Hope contributed to published reports with the Wilson Center regarding border security, counter-narcotics, and organized crime. In 2015, he co-authored the book “La mentada estrategia: dos ensayos y treinta y nueve preguntas sobre Seguridad, Justicia, Violencia y Delito”. Most of his research and writings focused on security in Mexico, violence surrounding drug cartels, and finding potential solutions to security policies in Mexico.

Alejandro Hope received his Bachelor’s degree from University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in political science at Princeton University. 

Alejandro Hope was a frequent Justice in Mexico partner, constantly participating in and moderating security panels and contributing his thoughts on most of our academic publications.
