11 associates of “La Barbie” were arrested in Colombia

09/01/10 – Following the arrest of Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias La Barbie, eleven people were detained in Colombia for having worked closely with Villarreal. The arrests were made in various Colombian cities just a few hours after the capture of Villarreal in México City. Authorities in the United States, México, and Colombia worked collaboratively to detain the individuals in both countries.

The eleven that were arrested reportedly established links between cartels in México and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Among the detained was Denis Alvarino Gómez Urrutia, alias El Negrito. Urrutia is said to have close ties with Luis Carlos Neiva Neiva, a high-ranking leader of the FARC, as well as being in charge of shipping large amounts of illicit drugs from Colombia to Villarreal’s cartel. Villarreal’s representative in Colombia, Julio Cesar Piña Soberanis, alias Julio, was also taken into custody.
