07/31/11 — Authorities believe that two agents from the Federal Ministerial Police (Policial Federal Ministerial, PFM), formerly known as the Federal Investigation Agency (Agencia Federal de Investigación, AFI) helped 33-year-old Héctor Eduardo Guajardo Hernández escape from his hospital on July 27. Guajardo Hernández, also known as “El Guicho,” was arrested on May 9 for his involvement in the Baja California-based Arellano Félix Cartel and later for working with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, as a high ranking member in the organization. During his capture, Guajardo Hernández was injured in the shootout and sent to Torre Médica hospital in the Federal District, where he remained in recovery under the control of PFM agents who were continuing their investigation on him. On Wednesday, “El Guicho” escaped out his hospital room’s window with the assistance of two PFM agents, announced the Attorney General’s Office (Procuraduría General de la República, PGR).
The Assistant Attorney General’s Office for Special Investigations on Organized Crime (Subprocuraduría Especializada en Delincuencia Organizada, SIEDO) has opened up an investigation on the two agents’ roles in assisting Guajardo Hernández, who has not yet been found by authorities. The head of the PGR, Marisela Morales, who ordered the investigation, also added that her organization “will continue working not only to combat organized crime, but also to cleanse the Attorney General’s office, with the goal of having honest and trustworthy public servants.” According to news source Radio Formula, PFM has evaluated over 41% of its agents since April 7 when efforts began to clean up the organization.
