U.S Consulate General temporarily closes offices in Ciudad Juárez to assess security

The U.S Consulate General announced the temporary closure of their embassy offices in Ciudad Juárez until further notice in order “to review its security posture.” Thus, all scheduled appointments and services have also been cancelled. The consulate has advised American citizens to avoid areas around the Consulate General until it reopens after authorities investigate the situation.

In March, the Consulate temporarily closed after it was attacked twice, resulting in the death of a Consulate employee. According to the online news source AFP, 50 Americans – mostly of Mexican origin – have died, and 30 have been kidnapped since 2008 in actions attributed to drug-related violence in Juárez.
