Senator Accused of Libel by Governor of Chihuahua

Chihuahua’s state governor José Reyes Baeza sued Senator Teresa Ortuño for libel damages.

The lawsuit filed with a court judge of the 8th District in Mexico City. Ortuno is accused for her statements she made accusing the governor of Chihuahua of having ties to organized crime.

The suit filed by Governor Baeza is on the order of 100 million pesos, but the judge will define the final amount if the senator is found guilty.

José Reyes Baeza said that if he wins the case the money will go to civic organizations such as the Chihuahua CRIT among others.

The governor also requests that the Senator publish an apology addressed to him retracting her statements.

Earlier this week the governor found support from five Catholic bishops and 19 pastors of evangelical churches, Baptist and Apostolic across the state. They gave their support to Governor Jose Reyes Baeza Terrazas, after accusations made by PAN senator Teresa Ortuna Garza, the national leader of PAN German Martinez, and candidates accused him of being linked to drug trafficking last week.
