Residents of Sinaloa are asked to give up firearms meanwhile eight police agents were killed in an ambush

10/11/10 – Residents in the state of Sinaloa can choose between a laptop and cash when they voluntarily give up their illegal firearms. The Executive Secretary of the State Board of Public Security, Herman Lauffer Mendoza, stated that the exchange program will be prevalent in the municipalities of Ahome, Angostura, Culiacán, Guasave, Mazatlán, Navolato, and Sinaloa de Leyva. This is the ninth time that the program has been rolled out; in the previous eight attempts, a total of 10,146 guns and 34 explosives were collected.

The announcement comes after eight policemen were killed during an ambush that took place in the municipality of Angostura. Early reports state that the agents were patrolling highway Benito Juárez before being ambushed. The agents were able to return fire before being killed.
