PRI candidate for governor in Tamaulipas is murdered

Rodolfo Torre Cantú, candidate for governor in Tamaulipas, was murdered Monday morning along with three other people; four more were hospitalized with injuries. His campaign coordinator, Enrique Blackmore, and personal assistant, Alejandro Martínez, were among the dead. The convoy in which they traveled was attacked while on route to the airport to travel to Valle Hermosa for a final campaign stop.

Senators Graco Ramírez and Santiago Creel Miranda expressed their sympathy for the murder of Rodolfo Cantú but expressed criticism for the PRI political party which Cantú represented. Both senators agreed that the recent murder is a sign of the PRI falling apart as a political party.

Rodolfo Cantú finished a final campaign rally on Sunday with an audience of nearly 15,000 people. Most of the major polls in Tamaulipas indicated that he was favored to win. Rodolfo Cantú was 45 years old.
