06/30/11 – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will be visiting Mexico from July 3 through July 9 to discuss issues concerning human rights with authorities at both federal and local levels of government. Pillay will be making the visit at the invitation of the Mexican government. She will be welcomed this Sunday by President Calderón, Attorney General Marisela Morales, and 7 ministers belonging to various governmental departments. The traveling coalition will start in Oaxaca and end in Mexico City.
Sources say that Pillay has a very “ambitious work agenda” to be fullfilled. The United Nations reports that issues including security, migrant rights, discrimination, women’s rights, indigenous rights, and freedom of expression are among the most important that will be examined. In addition, a discussion regarding the U.N. Millennium Development Goals is set to take place with heads of departments including Minister of Education Alonso Lujambio, Minister of Health José Ángel Córdova, and Minister of Social Development Heriberto Félix Guerra. The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico (Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas en México) has scheduled meetings between Pillay and Mexican civil organizations to further discuss the aforementioned topics. Pillay has also planned to launch a Human Rights Defenders’ Campaign known as “Declare Yourself Defender” during the middle of her visit on July 6. The U.N. reported that the campaign, which was designed by the aforementioned U.N. High Commissioner’s office, is aimed at spreading the message on the right to defend human rights among the general public.

Excellent post, thank you for the information. I have re-blogged this information at http://mexicosecurity.org. The information on this blog is fantastic and I love linking to it for my readers. The question I take away from this post is: Why do you feel Calderon publicly invited Pillay to Mexico? Do you feel it was more of a political choice or can Pillay truly help the country?
Thanks!
