Mexican Authorities Seize Mass Amounts of Weapons Supposedly Belonging to Los Zetas

06/03/11–The National Secretary of Defense announced the seizure of more than 150 large arms, seven small arms, thousands of bullet cartridges, four grenades, communications equipment, military style clothing, and one rocket launcher presumed to belong to the Los Zetas cartel. The weapons were found in the underground cellar of a building in the city of San Buenaventura in the state of Coahuila during a raid after military personal received information concerning illegal activities happening in the area.

According to CNN México, crime has flourished in the Coahuila area in the past two years as it has transformed into a violent border state due to the increased presence of Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel in the area. In order to combat the increased violence, President Felipe Calderón recently ordered more troops to a number of the border states, including Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas. The Mexican Department of Defense noted that weapons and arms seizures, such as the one in San Buenaventura, ultimately work to weaken the drug cartels operating in the area and battling one another for the lucrative drug trafficking routes into the United States.
