11/17/11 – Members of the Mexican Special Forces (Fuerzas Especiales) announced the arrest of another leading member of Los Zetas drug cartel on November 15. Alfredo Alemán Narváez, also known as “Alfredo N” and “El Comandante Alemán,” was detained in the state of Zacatecas during a horse racing event that he had coordinated. At Alemán Narváez’s presentation to the media in the Sub-Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations into Organized Crime (Subprocuraduría de Investigación Especializada en Delicuencia Organizada, SIEDO), which is a common practice in Mexico that is often criticized, it was announced that his arrest was the result of gathered military intelligence. Both air and land tactics were used in the operation that led to his arrest.
“Information indicates that Alfredo N was very close to Los Zetas main leader Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales… He was their main administrator in San Luis Potosí,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense (Secretaría de Defensa Nacional, SEDENA). Alemán Narváez, who at the time of his arrest was also working closely with fellow Zetas’ San Luis Potosí leader Iván Velázquez Caballero, known as “El Talibán,” was responsible for marijuana distribution in Mexico and the United States. He was assigned to the area of San Luis Potosí in order to confront members of the rival Gulf Cartel.
