Human Rights Watch notes that in various operations, Mexican soldiers have committed serious abuses against civilians

The organization Human Rights Watch said that the evidence of unpunished registered cases of military abuses contradicts President Felipe Calderón.

“The claim of President Felipe Calderón today that cases of military abuse are actually punished in Mexico is contradicted by the evidence,” the organization said in a statement.

HRW stated that in various operations, Mexican soldiers have committed serious abuses against civilians including rape, torture and murder.

“Last year, the National Ombudsman received one thousand 230 complaints of abuse by soldiers, six times more than the past three years,” he said.

In the morning, in the framework of the Summit Leaders North America, Calderon said the government has an absolute obligation to protect human rights and dared his critics to find a case where competent authorities have not punished those who abused their authority.
