Fourteen year old boy is shot and killed by US Border Patrol Agent

Early Tuesday morning, a US Border Patrol agent shot and killed a fourteen year old child near a bi-national bridge located south of El Paso, Texas.  The young boy, identified as Sergio Adrián Hernández Huereca, had been near the borderline with other children. It is still unclear as to whether they were playing and had wandered off across the border or were attempting to cross into the United States. The FBI is investigating the case due to the involvement of an agent of the United States.

Andrea Simmons, spokeswoman for the FBI in El Paso, Texas, stated that the agent discharged his weapon after being attacked without knowing exactly to whom he was directing his fire.

According the other children as well as the first Mexican police officer on the scene, the children were playing and had been running back into Mexico when the agent shot at the children. The young boy died on the Mexican side of the border.

Mexican consulate Roberto Rodríguez Hernández has asked for an extensive investigation. The young boy’s death follows a recent incident in where a Mexican immigrant, Anastasio Hernández, was tasered and beaten by Border Patrol agents in San Ysidro, California just north of the San Diego and Tijuana border crossing.
