11/23/10 – The former governor of Colima, Jesús Silverio Cavazos Ceballos, was murdered Saturday morning at 10:30 hours by three individuals who shot at him at least five times with .38 caliber pistols. According to official reports Silverio Cavazos was outside of his house when one of three individuals aboard a white Jeep Patriot got off the vehicle and fired five shots at him, three of which hit him. The secretary of Economic Development, Rafael Gutiérrez Villalobos, was with the ex governor at the time of the attack but was not seriously injured. Cavazos’s bodyguards repelled the attack and shot at the gunman but they where unable to catch them.

After the shooting a security operation was carried out in Colima and checkpoints were set up in different parts of the city. Governor Mario Anguiano stated that at one of the checkpoints elements from the Preventative State Police (Policía Estatal Preventiva) mistakenly shot and killed Mario Eduardo Robles, a medic who they considered to be making “suspicious” movements as he passed the checkpoint with his son. The 56-year-old worked as an ophthalmic surgeon at the ISSSTE clinic in Colima City and was about to retire.
