Discussion Forum: Balance and Prospects of the Reform to Mexico’s Judicial Power

May 25 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Please join us for a hybrid discussion forum on the “Balance and Prospects of the Reform to Mexico’s Judicial Power,” (Conversatorio: Balance y proyección de la Reforma del Poder Judicial) on Monday, May 25 at 5:00pm Pacific time. This expert panel discussion is co-sponsored by the Justice in Mexico program at the University of San Diego (USD) and the Estación Noroeste de Investigación y Docencia (ENID) “Héctor Felipe Fix-Fierro” of the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (IIJ) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). It will take place in hybrid format on Zoom/Youtube and in person at the ENID’s offices at Esperanza 4771, Soler, 22530 Tijuana, Baja California.

In the lead up to the one year anniversary of Mexico’s controversial June 2025 judicial elections held in Mexico on June 1, 2025, the panelists will consider the net results of the election results one-year after the fact—including concerns about the election’s legitimacy, low voter turnout, electoral manipulation, and the selection of unqualified judges—and the projected direction of future changes for the judicial power.

Featured panelists include the following judicial sector experts:

José Antonio Caballero Juárez, Researcher, Investigación y Docencia del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (UNAM)

Luis Enrique Concepción Montiel, Researcher and professor, Facultad de Derecho, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California  (UABC)

Sergio López Ayllón, Researcher, Investigación y Docencia del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (UNAM)

Paola Sam, Researcher, Estación Noroeste de Investigación y Docencia del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

David A. Shirk, Director, Justice in Mexico, University of San Diego

Juan Vega Gómez, Director, Estación Noroeste de Investigación y Docencia del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
