Drug Violence
Overview
For the last several years, Mexico has experienced a dramatic increase in high-profile homicides resulting from conflicts among drug traffickers and other organized crime groups. Unfortunately, there are few reliable and precise measures for tracking drug trafficking-related homicides. While the Mexican government collects information on drug trafficking-related violence through various public security and intelligence agencies, its data were not widely accessible to the public or reported in regular intervals until January 2011. This section of our site provides access to various sources of data and analysis on Mexican drug-related violence, drawing on available official, media, and academic sources.
TBI Drug Violence Dataset & Reports
Since November 2007, TBI’s Justice in Mexico Project has compiled Reforma’s data on drug-related killings as reported at the state level on a weekly basis, as well as the annual totals by state from 2006 to the present. The full dataset is available in Microsoft Excel format and is constantly updated. You can download it by clicking the icon below:
TBI reports associated with this dataset are listed below:
- Drug Violence in Mexico: Data and Analysis from 2001-2009 (Released in January 2010)
- Drug Violence in Mexico: 2010 Mid-Year Report (August 2010)
- Drug Violence in Mexico: Data and Analysis Through 2010 (Released in February 2011)
- Drug Violence in Mexico: Data and Analysis Through 2011 (Released in March 2012)
Mexican Government Data on Killings by Organized Crime Groups
Due to growing public scrutiny and pressure from civic organizations, the Mexican government made public some of its official data on drug violence beginning in 2010, as well as a comprehensive online database of “homicides presumably related to organized crime” released in January 2011. This new dataset offers a greater degree of precision than any available media sources, in that murders are tallied at the municipal level (rather than by state) and are categorized according to three types of violence: drug related executions (ejecucciones), violent confrontations (enfrentamientos), and aggression targeting authorities by organized crime groups (agresiones). The government’s publicly available database also accounts for homicides for each month from December 2006 through early January 2010, a longer detailed time series than available from most media sources.
TBI Data Gathering Project: Drug Violence Documentation
To help monitor and analyze recent drug violence in Mexico, the Trans-Border Institute developed the Data Gathering Project: Drug Violence Documentation to track various forms of violence reported by the media. Specifically, this effort seeks to help document special cases of homicide with high profile or special targets.
TBI Drug Violence Mapping
Using data compiled from Reforma, the TBI Justice in Mexico Project has developed GIS maps to evaluate and map trends in drug-related violence. Additional maps related to other key policy issues (such as poverty, inequality, elections, etc.) can be accessed by clicking here.
