Former treasurer of Michoacán indicted on embezzlement charges

A district court judge in Morelia, Michoacán has indicted a former treasurer of that state, Humberto Suárez López, on charges of embezzlement and abuse of authority after finding sufficient evidence against him. The judge ruled that Suárez may remain free during his judicial process, pending the payment of just under $49.9 million pesos (around $3.8 million USD). He is reportedly suffering from a number of health ailments, including hypertension; he has also battled lung cancer in the past, and had to be hospitalized the night of his arrest, according to Proceso.

Authorities searching for former president and owner of Mexicana Airlines on money laundering charges

Citing allegations of embezzlement and money laundering, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (Procuraduría General de la República, PGR) has asked Interpol to issue a Red Notice to member countries, seeking the location and arrest of Gastón Azcárraga Andrade, former owner and president of the airline Mexicana de Aviación, which had controlled as much as 30% of the domestic Mexican air travel market before filing for bankruptcy and ceasing operations in 2010, leaving thousands of current employees without a salary, and former employees with the future of their pensions very much in question.

Mexican government launches website detailing advancements of Plan Michoacán

The Mexican government this month launched a website (http://www.presidencia.gob.mx/PlanMichoacan/) intended to inform the public on the advancements made in Plan Michoacán, the social development plan announced in February by the President Enrique Peña Nieto, similar to that implemented in Ciudad Juárez by his predecessor, Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), amidst the security crisis in that city. That program, “Todos Somos Juárez,” is widely considered to have been a success. Homicides in the city decreased by 70% by some counts following the program’s implementation, though it is debatable how much of this decrease resulted from Todos Somos Juárez, as opposed to the likelihood that organized crime-related homicides fell off due to the Sinaloa Cartel winning its turf war with the Juárez Cartel.
